有些火山是活火山,有些則是不再活躍。大部分的科學家主張活火山是在過去一萬年內爆發過的火山。世界上約有1500座活火山,而地球超過半數的火山都位於一個稱為火環帶的區域。不活躍的休眠火山通常不危險,因為這麼一座火山已經不再噴發。不過,這種火山在未來還是有可能再度爆發,但有些不活躍的死火山則是可能永遠不會再爆發。

Some volcanoes are active, and some are inactive. Most scientists say that an active volcano is one that has erupted in the last 10,000 years. There are about 1,500 active volcanoes around the world. More than half of the earth's volcanoes are in a region called the Ring of Fire. An inactive volcano usually isn't a danger, because it no longer erupts. But it's possible for it to erupt sometime in the future. Some inactive volcanoes will likely never erupt again.
