很多人都搞不清 relation 和 relationship 的分別，值得在這裏說明一下。兩個字的意思其實一模一樣，都解作「關係」，所以兩者的分別，其實在於用法。
如果想說美國和日本的關係很好，你可以說 America has a good relationship with Japan。但如果要用 relation 這個字去表達同一意思，又是否可以？當然沒問題，但有一點需要注意。
說 America has a good relation with Japan 有點怪怪的，因為用得 relation 呢個字，通常都會寫 relations，即是要加 s。表示美國和日本的關係良好，應該說 America has good relations with Japan，這裏的 relations 是指「各種交往」，也就是「關係」的意思了。另一個例子，說政府和地產商的關係改善了，你既可以說 the relationship between the government and property developers has improved，亦可以話 relations between the government and property developers have improved。
但有時候，relation 這個字又未必需要加 s 喎。舉例，要說 A 和 B 的關係，你可以說 the relationship between A and B，或者 the relation between A and B。那麼是否代表 relationship 和 relation 在這個情況下可以「隨你喜歡二擇其一」呢？嚴格來說，不可以亂用。
如果要說兩個人或團體的關係，用 relationship 比較合理，例如 the relationship between Mrs. Chan and her son。但如果要表達兩個「抽象」的概念，則用 relation 較為妥當，例如 the relation between interest rate and property prices，即是利息與樓價之間的關係。
Relationship 除可解作關係之外，也有「戀情」的意思，所以在 facebook 看到有兩個人的 status 是 in a relationship，那就是說他們在拍拖了。有沒有聽過人說 a meaningful relationship？例如話 Felix and Katie had a meaningful relationship，其實就係話 Felix 同 Katie 有過一段超友誼關係，這裏的 meaningful 完全不是「有意義」的意思。
要說兩個團體或國家的關係變差，可以用 deteriorate，例如話 the relationship between America and Japan has deteriorated。至於形容兩個人的關係變差，當然用 sour 這個字更傳神，例如 the relationship between my brother and his girlfriend has soured。

Relation vs relationship
再回來看relation這個字，常有學生問relationship和relation有何不同？
Relation和relationship差別在於後者多了一個ship，ship是一種狀態，relationship是形容一種情感狀態，例如：
John和Mary在交往中，我們會說
（Ｏ）John and Mary are in a relationship.
（Ｘ）John and Mary are in a relation.
Relation指的是一種關聯性，國家和國家之間的關係、經濟關係，都用relation，經常用複數：
They are anxious to develop friendly relations with their neighboring countries.
他們急於和鄰國發展友好關係。
但如果用”have relations with someone”，這種關係就不只是一般關係，而是指性關係：
I heard Jim got fired for having relations with his secretary. 我聽說Jim因為和秘書有染被開除了。
