IN UGANDA FARM WASTE BECOMES GREAT PRODUCTS
A common saying goes, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." In Uganda, a start-up is testing that idea out with the stalks of banana trees. The trees are easy to acquire in Uganda, where bananas are a common crop. It's rare to see the fibers of the stalk being used for much. The start-up, TexFad, is betting it can find many new uses for them.

Banana stalks can't be consumed, so after farmers harvest the bananas, the stalks are usually abandoned as waste. Before that can happen, TexFad gets hold of them and turns the natural fibers of the stalk into household items at its facility.

The fibers produced by a banana stalk can be used to make durable carpets. Another option is to use them as hair extensions after a special process makes them softer. The fibers are not only strong but also biodegradable. Because of that, if a product made from them is thrown away, it will positively impact the environment, as it can serve as fertilizer for the soil.

TexFad's work in Uganda might also hold potential for Taiwan. Here, too, bananas are a major established crop, and the fibers often go to waste. If someone follows TexFad's lead, you might eventually be able to purchase some green products made with Taiwanese banana fibers in stores near you!
