Learn about the history behind Carnival celebrations.
With 6.7 million people, Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in Brazil. A 38-meter statue of Jesus stands above the city. And what was Jesus' first miracle? Turning water into wine! Therefore, it is no surprise that Rio parties like nowhere else on Earth. During Carnival, each day for around a week, more than two million people party in the streets of Rio.
The Samba school parade is one of the main events. Samba is an African-influenced Brazilian musical style. Samba schools are clubs that practice and perform this art form, which involves dance, drums, and other musical instruments. During Rio's Carnival, these Samba schools competes in the Sambadrome.
While locals might go to the parade, they're more likely to be found at various street festivals around town. At those festivals, music, dance, and drink take center stage. People often wear costumes, but not as fancy as the ones worn for the Sambadrome. Apart from a good time, Carnival is also big business. In 2020, Rio made over US$700 million from tourists alone!
