◎There have already been near misses involving Starlink satellites.
>> Usage Tip
There have aready been near misses involving Starlink satellites.
misses 為複數型,故動詞要用have+been
◎In space, collisions must be avoided at all costs.

● collisions (n) 碰撞·撞
· Even a small collision with another car can cause damage that is expensive to fix.
◎Objects in orbit move at extreme speeds, and even things as small as a screw can cause catastrophic damage upon impact.
· Scientists have found clues that certain catastrophic events in the past nearly killed everything on our planet.
◎Eventually, Starlink plans to have 42,000 satellites in orbit.
◎If even a small percentage of those were damaged, that could fill the sky with dangerous debris.
◎Starlink is responding by tweaking the design so that their satellites reflect less light.

STARLINK
Satellite-based, high-speed internet service
If all goes according to plan, Starlink will have enough satellites to offer global internet services by the end of 2021. Not everyone is happy with the idea, though.
Astronomers in particular are very concerned. Unlike satellites in geosynchronous orbits, LEO satellites interfere with telescope observations and leave bright marks on long-exposure pictures.
National space agencies are also concerned. There have already been near misses involving Starlink satellites. In space, collisions must be avoided at all costs. Objects in orbit move at extreme speeds, and even things as small as a screw can cause catastrophic damage upon impact.
Eventually, Starlink plans to have 42,000 satellites in orbit. If even a small percentage of those were damaged, that could fill the sky with dangerous debris.
Starlink is responding by tweaking the design so that their satellites reflect less light. They also are lowering the orbit distance to about 550 kilometers. That would cause any failed satellites to fall into Earth's atmosphere quickly and burn up.
Starlink still has a long way to go to safely provide the globe with a high-quality internet service. But if they can, it will be a major step forward in connecting everyone on the planet.
